50th Remembrance of the Death of Resistance Fighter Franz Jaegerstaetter
Resistance fighter Franz Jaegerstaetter was born on May 20, 1907 in St. Radegund. He was first called to the military in the summer of 1940 when he was sworn in on June 17 in Braunau. He was able to return to his home only a few days later due to his hometown mayor's intervention. Jaegerstaetter served in the armed forces from October 1940 until April 1941, though not on the front. After receiving more leaves of absence, the deeply religious Jaegerstaetter decided not to comply with further draft orders. As further orders arrived, he presented himself before the military authorities and announced his refusal. On August 9, 1943 at 4 pm, he paid with his life for his deep conviction against military service in pursuit of National Socialist goals. Jaegerstaetter was one of 16 victims sentenced to death by decapitation.
