National Customs and Folklore Treasures: Blochziehen (Log Dragging), Burgenland
Particularly in the south of Burgenland, but also in parts of Styria and Carinthia throughout the upper Inn Valley and in the Lungau, the tradition of "Blochziehen", log dragging, is kept every Carnival Sunday (or Monday, as the case may be). All attention is focused on the log (a decorated tree trunk of respectable length cleaned of any branches), which is carried in procession out of the forest into the town. This tradition originated from a method to punish young girls and boys if no weddings took place in their respective town within the period of time from one carnival to another (one year). The log represents the bride in this nuptial parody, in which all main characters of a wedding ceremony, such as the groom and witness, partake.
