Art: 300th Birthday of Joseph Emmanuel Fischer von Erlach (Michaelertrakt/Hauptkuppel)
Joseph Emmanual Fischer von Erlach was born on September 13, 1693 in Vienna. His father, a high-ranking court official employed as the architectural instructor to the throne's heir and preferred architect of nobility, laid the foundation for his son's thorough education. After studying in England and France, Joseph Emmanuel returned to Vienna in 1722 a very well-educated architect. Shortly thereafter he joined the service of Prince Schwarzenberg and relieved his seriously ill father of the duties involved in directing construction of the Schwarzenberg Palace on the Rennweg and Kaerntner Strasse. After his appointment to imperial court architect, he completed the Hofburg Horse Stalls and the National Library, whose construction was originally begun by his father. The architect died in 1742 and deserves credit as having paved the way for classical Austrian architecture through a combination of modern French creative elements and characteristic Austrian Baroque, which his father helped form.
