5th Anniversary of the Rise of St. Poelten to Provincial Capital
With the separation of Vienna from Lower Austria, effective from January 1, 1922, the largest province of the Austrian Republic lost its capital and nucleus. After sixty-odd years with no official provincial capital, citizens voted in favor of St. Poelten in a 1986 public opinion poll. In recent years St. Poelten has experienced an economic upswing and a complete image renewal. To warrant its worthiness as provincial capital, the city commands an impressive history, as it existed as early as 5,000 years ago. Even the Romans dwelled here in a colony by the name of Aelium Cetium. The city received its present-day name from its cathedral, the Hippolyt Cloister, founded in the 8th century.
