100 Years Army Historical Museum
Based on experiences from the 1848 Revolution, a decision was reached in Autumn of that same year to construct an Imperial Artillery Arsenal on a hilltop outside Vienna, designed to guard against future civil unrest. The arsenal/museum was constructed from 1850 to 1856 in the Moorish-Byzantine style by Danish architect Theophil Hansen. It initially housed the imperial weapons collection. When these pieces were moved to the newly-built Museum of Art History, this Imperial Weapons Museum was renamed Imperial Military Museum, and served to exhibit Austrian military evolution. After its destruction during the Second World War, the museum was re-opened in 1955 as today's Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Historical Army Museum).
