Wernberg Cloister, Carinthia from the series Abbeys and Cloisters in Austria
Perched far above the Drava River near Villach lies the Wernberg Cloister. The Werdenburch Estate, known as Wernberg after 1403, was situated in this place already in the High Middle Ages. This estate belonged to the Benedictine Cloister of St. Paul, which was founded by the Sponnheimers and upheld by Carinthian Dukes after 1122. The Cloister of Ossiach purchased the estate in 1672. The Wernberg Estate was abolished in 1783 during the cloister reforms of Josef II, and after numerous changes in ownership came under the dominion of the Sisters of Precious Blood in 1935. Today the missionary nuns at Wernberg live out their apostolic orders based on the Benedictine philosophy Ora et Labora. Local as well as foreign visitors to the Wernberg Cloister cherish the warm Benedictine hospitality encountered at the numerous receptions hosted there.
