Obir Dripstone Caverns from the series Natural Beauty in Austria
Already in Celtic and Roman times the Vellach Valley was valued as a useful transportation and trade route. Situated here not far from Eisenkappel, which was first mentioned in 1050, lie the Obir Dripstone Caverns in whose catchment area lead and zinc have been mined since 1720. The beauty of this geological wonder can be seen in three individual caverns: the Long Grotto (130 meters), the Wartburg Cavern (700 meters), and the Little Grotto (130 meters), each of which were scientifically documented by Dr. Hubert Trimmel in 1957. This natural wonder was opened to the public in April 1991 thanks to continuous efforts on the part of the Obir Dripstone Committee. Visitors can not only explore the wondrous caverns and mine exhibit, but can also enjoy a splendid view of the Jaun Valley.
