100th Commemoration of the Death of Theophil Hansen
Theophil Hansen was born in Copenhagen on July 13, 1813. The young architect was deeply influenced by his experiences in Greece, where his brother invited him to participate in the construction of Athens University. Here he was exposed to architecture of Antiquity, and became acquainted with Byzantine structural characteristics. Over the years, Hansen began applying these influences to his architecture and in 1846 came to Vienna where, together with other architects, he helped to construct the Vienna Arsenal (1849-1856). In the years prior to his death on February 17, 1891, Vienna's Parliament Building, Academy of Fine Arts, and Stock Exchange were all constructed under the guidance of this great architect.
