250th Commemoration of the Death of Raphael Donner
Raphael Donner was born a carpenter's son on May 24, 1693 in Esslingen, which today is part of Vienna's 22nd district. He studied to become a goldsmith and at the age of thirteen became apprentice to the sculptor Giovanni Giuliani. Donner celebrated his first successes with the Martin Group in Pressburg, yet his most famous creation is the Donner Fountain located in Vienna's Neumarkt, which was cast in lead and completed in 1739. Mannerism came to describe the art-historical tradition Donner applied when creating this fountain. Donner died in Vienna on February 15, 1741 shortly after completing the Pieta in the Gurk Cathedral.
