80th Birthday of Bruno Kreisky
Kreisky's political life began in 1926 with his entrance into a socialist middle school, where he advanced to the Socialist Club of Young Workers soon after. He was summoned as political advisor to the office of then President Koerner, where he made significant contributions to the concept of a free and independent Austria. In 1953 Kreisky became Under-Secretary and in 1959 Federal Minister of the Foreign Ministry, which was from then on detached from the Federal Chancellery. His involvement in the Austrian Socialist Party lead him in 1966 to the position of chairman, and in 1970 Dr. Kreisky became Federal Chancellor. After three successful, consecutive terms of office, Kreisky withdrew from active political life in 1983 after his party failed to achieve an absolute majority for yet a fourth term. Dr. Bruno Kreisky died in Vienna on July 29, 1990 after an extended illness.
