30 Years Austrian U.N. Soldiers for the Cause of Peace
The United Nations was founded originally by 51 member states on June 26, 1945 in San Francisco. United Nations Day celebrates the anniversary of the initiation of the U. N. Charter of October 24, 1945. Today the U. N. is comprised of 160 member states. The newly-formed Austrian Republic joined the U. N. on December 14, 1955, and Vienna has been the seat of its third headquarters since 1979. Since 1960 Austria has participated in ten peace-keeping missions with a contingent of 28,000 soldiers. Of these, 26 have lost their lives in the name of peace.
