100th Birthday of Franz Werfel
Franz Werfel was born to a rich glove manufacturer in Prag on September 10, 1890. Werfel's debut, which gained him entry into the ranks of the most famous personalities of his time as the co-founder of expressionism, was the inspiration for his brilliant work. Already at the age of 20, his book of poetry Der Weltfreund (Friend of the World) appeared, followed by Wir sind (We Are) (1913) and Gerichtstag (Court Day) (1919). Werfel was summoned to the war-time press headquarters in Vienna in 1917. There his friend from Prag Egon Erwin Kisch introduced him into the circle of the Cafe Central, where he met with other great personalities, such as Robert Musil, Egon Friedell, Albert Paris Guetersloh, and Karl Kraus. In 1938 when Hitler's troops marched into Vienna Werfel was forced to emigrate via France and Portugal to America, where he died of a heart attack on August 26, 1945.
