850 Years Gumpoldskirchen
Gumpoldskirchen is situated around 20 kilometers to the south of Vienna at the foot of the Anninger (674 meters above sea level). Gumpoldskirchen was first mentioned in 1140 in the records of the cathedral provost Gumpold von Pornheim. Wine-growing was the cornerstone of the market's economy already in the Middle Ages, yet Turkish control in 1529 and the Turkish war of 1693 brought serious set-backs to its economic development. In 1787 the industrial age was brought to Gumpoldskirchen with the introduction of a silk-threading factory. After completion of the Wiener Neustaedter shipping canal in 1803, the first businesses emerged along its waterways. These early businesses gave prelude to the expansive industrial zone which exists in Gumpoldskirchen today.
