The first allusion to a settlement in the area of today's city of St. Andrä can be found in a deed of gift from Carolingian times. According to this, King Louis 'the German' handed over the "Court in the Lavant" to Archbishop Adalwin of Salzburg on November 20, 860. Another document is especially meaningful to the history of St. Andrä. In this document dated April 18, 1339, Duke Albrecht of Austria allows Archbishop Heinrich of Salzburg the fortification of St. Andrä. Therewith St. Andrä met the most important criteria for a city in those days, namely fortification by wall and trench. In the following years, further features characteristic of a city such as administration via judges, council, or city parliament, and the use of a city seal among others can be verified. Today, special sights which visitors to the city can enjoy include the pilgrimage church of St. Mary of Loretto, St. Andrä's parish church, the fortified church of St. Mary of Rojach, Kollegg Castle, the Lavant Valley Native House, and the old city gate.
