Day of the Stamp, 1988
With this commemorative stamp honoring the 1988 Day of the Stamp, the Postal Administration has focused on a central element of its organization, which the stamp's picture addresses with its portrayal of a postal rail car. The establishment of the first private horse-drawn rail car on the European continent in 1832 resulted in a shift of the Austrian Postal Administration's monopoly of mail delivery. The railway's continuing development in the ensuing decades lead to the first "Imperial and Royal Travelling Post Office", which commenced operation on August 1, 1850. This date brought fruitful mutual cooperation between the postal carrier and the railway through to the present. The picture shown on the commemorative stamp dates back to 1914. It shows a public employee loading a "travelling post office" in Pardubice in Bohemia.
