400 Years of Continuous Postal Service in Carinthia
The first evidence of an independent post office in Carinthia dates back to the year 1558. In those days they hired "Tomas Wangkho of Velkhenmarkt" (today Völkermarkt) as their postal carrier. The most likely route of this initial postal delivery service in Carinthia ran from Klagenfurt through Pack to Graz. Along with the route from Klagenfurt to Ljubljana, these passages played a crucial role through to the early 18th century. The postal service, however, was not a permanent one. It became permanent only after the postal route from Vienna to Venice via Graz and Ljubljana was established. Therewith the Klagenfurt to Ljubljana connection appealed to Carinthia with its connections to the imperial postal routes of the day. On August 15, 1588, Carinthia employed Georg Griuz as its postal carrier for the route from Klagenfurt to Ljubljana. This date also marks the occasion of the 400th anniversary. Since that date postal service in Klagenfurt, that is to say Carinthia, has not been interrupted.
