IV Special Winter Olympics - Innsbruck, 1988
For the second time Austria organized the Winter Games for the Handicapped, which took place from January 17-24, 1988 in Innsbruck where they were held previously in 1984. Organizing these "1988 Winter Olympics" was simplified considerably through the formation of the International Coordination Committee for Handicapped Sports (ICC) which combined all handicapped sporting associations. Financing the Games was secured through contributions from the Austrian Republic, the Province of Tyrol, the city of Innsbruck, and Austrian sporting associations for the disabled, not to mention through the publication of a commemorative postage stamp, and revenue from advertising and sponsors. The date of the IV Special Winter Olympics was chosen so that the closing ceremonies would take place three weeks before the opening of the Winter Olympics in Calgary.
