1986 Provincial Exhibit at Herberstein Castle - The Bridge and Bastion of Styria
As early as the Bronze Age and Urnfield culture, Thracians and the people they drove out on the other side of the Lafnitz were hindered from penetrating mid-Styrian civilisation by fortified cavern settlements. It was in those days that Styria's dynamic history began, and down through the centuries it was constantly withstanding and protecting itself from enemy attack. Strongly tested by mass migration, German colonies began populating the area as of the second quarter of the 8th century during Bavaria's occupation of the Enn Valley. In the centuries that followed, Styria was subject to the conflicting interests of the most divergent European nobility. Through to this century Styria was served as both border and bridge between various peoples and cultures. The exhibit outlined Styria's timeline of historical destiny. It sought to document this period of world history and focus on a country that managed to hold off the threat of Turkish invasion with its military borders. Indeed this exhibit's location was not randomly selected. Decorating this commemorative stamp next to the Styrian provincial coat of arms, Castle Herberstein in the east of Styria is truly an architectural jewel - from its Gothic central structure to its splendid Florentine courtyard.
