Prince Eugene Exhibits in Castles Schlosshof and Niederweiden, 1986
The historic exhibit of 1986, dedicated to Prince Eugene, took place in the Castles of Schlosshof and Niederweiden situated in the Marchfeld. Through this exhibit two Baroque structures became the focus of attention, both of which are closely linked to the character of Prince Eugene. The exhibit was part of the festivities celebrating the 250th anniversary of the death of this great statesman and commander of the Austrian Monarchy, who died on April 1, 1736. In the year 1725 the already 62-year-old Prince Eugene of Savoy purchased the estate of Hof an der March from Count Albrecht von Saint Julien. He united it with that of Obersiebenbrunn (which he received as a gift from the Emperor in the previous year) and with the neighboring estate of Engelhartstetten, on whose grounds the Baroque hunting castle Niederweiden was situated. The superb hunting grounds of the Marchau were particularly persuasive in this decision. Prince Eugene's new summer home was elaborately furnished.0 The stamp shows a detail taken from a painting by Bernardo Bellotto, named Canaletto, a landscape painter who was born in Venice on January 30, 1720 and who died in Warsaw on October 17, 1780.
