Commemorative stamp

It was thirty years ago on April 16, 1986 that Austria became a full member of the European Council. Upon its accession immediately after regaining full sovereignty, Austria laid down a fundamental declaration of parliamentary democracy, rule of law, and human rights and also expressed its intention to effectively contribute to European cooperation. The European Council was formed in London on May 5, 1949. Its chief organs are the Ministers' Committee and the Parliamentary Assembly. The Council's main areas of responsibility include the preservation of human rights and basic freedoms, social and socio-economic matters, education, learning and culture, and issues effecting youth. Furthermore, fostering a public health system, nature conservation, and environmental protection and planning stand in the foreground. This commemorative stamp shows the flag of the European Council.
