Introduction of the Austrian Digital Telephone Network - 1986
In its more than 100-year existence, the Austrian telephone network has grown regularly and in 1986 it encompassed roughly 2.7 million connections. In the years 1977-1978 the Austrian Postal and Telegraph Administration established its goal of introducing a new exchange throughout Austria by mid 1980. To implement this plan, the ÖFEG (Austrian Telecommunications Development and Promotion Company, Inc.) was founded in Vienna on October 9, 1978. This company's tasks entailed the production and implementation of the Austrian Digital Telephone Network's ÖES (Austrian Electronic System). On July 23, 1981 the Postal Headquarters decided to consider Austria's adaptation into two basic networks: the DMS 100 System from Canada's Northern Telecom and the EWSD System from Siemens, Inc. in Munich. Two of the four ÖFEG partner concerns each established technical development centers, where the DMS 100 System was developed into the ÖESD system and the EWSD System was developed into the ÖESE. Creation of the first ÖESD system was begun in Vienna in 1985. Customer connections followed in February of 1986, through which users were able to phone digitally using the ÖES for the first time.
