Viennese Classic - Early Period

Matthias Georg Monn: Symphony in G

Matthias Georg Monn (1717 - Wien - 1750) together with Georg Christoph Wagenseil and Josef Starzer count as the better-known composers of the so-called Viennese Pre-Classical School. It is a little-known fact that Monn's Symphonie in G (1749) introduces a kind of second theme ( Seitenthema) very early in the history of the symphony - this was important for the development of the so-called Sonata Form. He was also a pioneer (1740) for using a minuet in the third movement of the type of symphony with three movements. (E. Stadler)
