Joseph Lanner (1801 - Vienna - 1843) was a friend and later rival of Johann Strauß/the Elder but unlike him, maintained a certain folk-like character in his works. Although Straß went on to become internationally famous, Lanner remained the favorite violinist of the Viennese. The Dornbacher Ländler (Dornbach was a village on the outskirts of Vienna; Ländler is a predecessor of the Waltz) were composed before 1828 and exude his so typical folk-like elements. In the early 19th c, the waltz developed into a form consisting of an introduction, 5 to 6 waltzes and a coda. This went hand in hand with the stylisation of the Ländler. (E.
