Creator of formal aesthetics, is regarded as the "first historiographer of aesthetics"; Professor at the University of Olmütz (Olomouc), Prague and Vienna (from 1861). Together with E. Reich he founded the Grillparzer-Gesellschaft (Grillparzer Society) in 1890. Works: Philosophische Propädeutik, 1852; Ästhetik, 2 vols., 1858/1865; Philosophie und Erfahrung, 1861; Studien und Kritiken zur Philosophie und Ästhetik, 2 vols., 1870; Anthroposophie, 1882. - Poetry, epic poem.
