Professor at the University of Vienna from 1782 (Vice-Chancellor in 1803 and 1807), 1802 senior civil servant (Hofrat) with the supreme judicial body of the Empire. Compiled the Austrian civil code (Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, ABGB)and introduced a new curriculum for law studies in 1810; greatly contributed to the compilation of the first part of the Austrian penal code in 1803.
