Castle of Johannisberg near Javorniky (Czech Republic), Feb. 28, 1790, d. Vienna, March 16, 1862, writer and army officer. Friend of the young Joseph von Eichendorff; employed at the State Chancellery from 1838-1848; wrote patriotic poetry ("Die nächtliche Meerschau") in the Romantic tradition; his dramatic works comprised mainly tragedies ("Herr und Sclave", 1831). Further works: Poetry: Todtenkränze, 1828; Gedichte, 1832, 1859; Soldaten-Büchlein, 2 vols., 1849/50. - Kerker und Krone, 1834 (drama); Über die orientalische Frage, 1840 (political pamphlet); translations (Lord Byron). - Edition: Dramatische Werke, 4 vols., 1830-1836.
