Wolfgang, saint, feast day Oct. 31, b. Swabia (probably at Pfullingen) around 924, d. Pupping (Upper Austria), Oct. 31, 994, Benedictine, missionary in Hungary around 972, bishop of Regensburg from 972 to 994. Introduced a reform of Austrian monasteries during his term of office at Regensburg. Stayed at Mondsee in 976/77, from where he probably founded several churches. The pilgrimage to St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut (on Lake Wolfgangsee), where he is said to have lived as a hermit, was first documented in 1306. Canonised in 1052; worshipped since the 14th and 15th century, especially in Upper Austria and in Salzburg.
