Winterhalter, JosefWinterhalter, Josef, b. Vöhrenbach near Donaueschingen (Germany), Jan. 25, 1743, d. Znojmo, Czech Republic (then Znaim), Jan. 17, 1807, painter of frescoes and altar-pieces. Worked mainly in Moravia but also in Hungary and Lower Austria; was strongly influenced by F. A. Maulbertsch, with whom he worked on various occasions (Kirchberg am Wagram, Halbturn, Pöltenberg near Znaim, etc.). Works: Frescoes: in the monastery church of Obrowitz near Brno (Czech Republic), in the cathedral of Steinamanger (Szombathely, Hungary) and in the monastery library of Geras (Lower Austria).
