Windisch-Graetz, Adelsgeschlecht


Windisch-Graetz, Styrian noble family, first documented mention around 1220, ancestral castle Slovenj Gradec (today in Slovenia, German: Windischgrätz). Became Princes of the Empire in 1804 and were granted the Austrian prince's title in 1822. In the 19th century, the majority of the family members were army officers. Two thirds of their enormous real property in Slovenia and Bohemia was lost after 1918 and the rest after 1945. Well-known members of the family include: Count Pankraz Windisch-Graetz, Prince Alfred (I) of Windisch-Graetz, Prince Alfred (III) of Windisch-Graetz, Franz Windisch-Graetz.
