Founder and 1st director of the Vienna City Library (1855), of the City Archives (1863) and of the Historical Museum (1888); 1874 Director of Archives and Libraries. Brought the objects of the Burghers' Armory into the custody of museums, participated in organising the triumphal procession 1879, reserved a separate area of the Central Cemetery for personalities of outstanding merit and was partly responsible for the ornamental designs for the Vienna Town Hall.
