Weingartner, Felix (Edler von Münzberg), b. Zadar, Croatia (then Zara), June 2, 1863, d. Winterthur (Switzerland), May 7, 1942. Orchestra conductor, neo-Romantic composer, music writer. Successor to G. Mahler as the director of the Court Opera of Vienna (1908-1911), 1919-1924 director of the Volksoper and 1935/36 of the State Opera. 1908-1927 director of the Vienna Philharmonic concerts; went to Switzerland in 1927.


Works: Operas (mainly on his own texts), symphonies, symphonic poems, orchestra works, chamber music, concertos, choral works, songs. - Writings: Die Lehre von der Wiedergeburt und das musikalische Drama, 1895; Über das Dirigieren, 1896; Die Symphonie nach Beethoven, 1898; Ratschläge für Aufführungen klassischer Symphonien, 3 vols., 1906-1923; Akkorde (collected essays), 1912; Lebenserinnerungen, 2 vols., 1923/29.
