Water Level (gauge height), vertical distance of a point on the water surface below or above a key horizon, the gauge datum. In Austria, water levels are observed daily or continuously recorded at approximately 800 locations. Central telemetric recording of level readings from important locations is customary. Continuous records of Danube water level readings since 1821 have been kept at Linz. Water levels have been published by the Hydrographic Service in hydrographic yearbooks since 1893. Water levels on the Danube are announced daily for the shipping industry. In the case of Floods the provincial hydrographic service department concerned publishes current water levels and forecasts in the interest of public safety.
