Vichtenstein Castle, Upper Austria, district of Schärding, medieval castle from the 11th century at the border of the Sauwald region in the upper Danube valley (first documentary mention in 1097); passed to the Diocese of Passau in 1254, came into Austrian property in 1782. Splendid castle, very well preserved, Romanesque keep in the outer ward (12th century), grand hall (16th century) with 3 towers, chapel with presbytery (14th century), nave (17th century).
