Verbraucherpreisindex, VPI

Consumer Price Index, one of the most important and best known index numbers of the Austrian Central Statistical Office, announced each month, shows the rate of price increases which affect the final consumers. Calculating from a base year, the average price level of which is equated with 100, the respective monthly index number indicates the percentage by which prices have changed on an average in relation to the base period (index 86 = base year 1986). A new consumer price index with the base year 1996 is being prepared. The shopping basket of the consumer price index at present comprises 615 goods and services.
