Urania, founded 1897 in Vienna as an institute for popular science after the Berlin model, by the Lower Austrian Trade Association (Gewerbeverein); at first run as a syndicate, soon turned into a charitable society, which derived its policies from adult education centres in Denmark; moved into its own building on the Danube Canal in 1910, where it established an educational centre (with astronomical observatory and electric clock) and was among the first to use the latest mechanical aids in its educational programmes (slides, films). The Vienna Urania reached the peak of its influence during the 1st Republic (opening of branch offices outside of Vienna, of which the ones in Baden and Hollabrunn still exist today); in the 2nd Republic it became a member of the association of adult education centres (Volkshochschulverband). A Graz Urania existed from 1919 to 1938, the "Austrian Urania for Styria", with branch offices, has been an important adult education centre in Styria since 1947 (Adult Education).
