Thirring, WalterThirring, Walter, b. Vienna, April 29, 1927, physicist; son of Hans Thirring. Studied physics at the University of Vienna, pursued his scientific career at various institutions in Europe and the USA (including the Max Planck Institute, Göttingen, ETH Zurich, Berne University, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, USA), since 1959 professor of theoretical physics at the University of Vienna, from 1968 to 1971 also Director of the Department of Theoretical Physics of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN, Centre européen de recherches nucléaires). Awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1993. Works: Einführung in die Quantenelektrodynamik, 1955; Lehrbuch der mathematische Physik, 4 vols., 1977-80.
