TaubeDoves and Pigeons: Along with the common feral rock dove, species in Austria include wood pigeon, stock dove, turtledove and collar dove. The collar dove was originally indigenous to the Indian subcontinent and came to Central Europe via Turkey and the Balkans. It was first seen in Vienna in1943 and today occurs in all of Central Europe. The feeding of doves and pigeons in Vienna is regulated by the ordinance under which feeding doves and pigeons is legal as long as no feed leftovers remain. In the vicinity of larger towns, pigeons are a common pest, feeding on seeds and seedlings. In towns and cities, historical buildings and monuments are often fouled by bird droppings.
