Spike-ReifenTyres, Studded: Motor vehicle tyres fitted with metal studs to enhance grip on icy and snow-bound roads. Available in Austria since the mid-1960s. Use of studded tyres is restricted to the period from November to Easter and has been steadily declining. Drivers of vehicles fitted with studded tyres have to observe a speed limit of 80 k.p.h. on federal roads and 100 k.p.h. on motorways.
