Hazardous Waste: under the Waste Management Act of 1985 as amended, hazardous waste must not be collected together with household refuse and bulk waste; there are separate plants for the disposal of hazardous waste, controlled landfill is permitted on sites assigned for this purpose by the authorities. Hazardous waste include: oils and varnishes (paints), wood treated with chemicals (e.g. railway sleepers), acids, materials containing heavy metals, chemicals, batteries, mercury thermometers, pesticides, drugs and toxic sludge. Since 1980 the Entsorgungsbetriebe Simmering have been managing hazardous waste from eastern Austria; in 1994 these plants incinerated 80,000 tons of hazardous waste and 180,000 tons of sludge from Vienna.
