Sobotka, Walter


Sobotka, Walter, b. Vienna, July 1, 1888, d. New York (USA), May 8, 1970, architect and designer. Studied at the University of Technology in Vienna. Worked on commission from 1923. 1938 emigration to the USA and new start as designer of furniture for Thonet in New York, from 1940 onwards free-lance. Teaching assistant for arts and craft as well as textiles from 1941, later for interior furnishing at Pittsburgh University and until 1958 at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.


Works: furnishings for the ´Werkbundsiedlung´ (housing estate) in Stuttgart, 1927; residential buildings in the 3rd district of Vienna, Weinlechnergasse, 1927, and in the 21st district of Vienna, Donaufelderstraße, 1931; house in the Vienna ´Werkbundsiedlung´, 1930-1932; furnishing of the Apartment Rafalski, New York, 1940; Project Prefabricated House, publicized 1947.
