Heron, Great White: at the 12th world conference of the "International Council for Bird Preservation" (Tokyo 1960) a national bird was selected for each country. Austria was assigned the great white heron, a rare bird in Austria. The colony of great white herons near Lake Neusiedl is the most important one in Europe and the only colony to be found so far to the north-east. Burgenland is the only Austrian region where great white herons breed.
