Septimius Severus, b. Leptis Magna (Libya), April 11, 146; d. Eburacum (York, United Kingdom), Feb. 4, 211. Roman emperor 193-211. Was proclaimed Roman emperor at Carnuntum, which was subsequently given the rank of a Colonia, on April 9, 193, when governor of Pannonia Superior. Under his rule Pannonia saw a second period of prosperity. He granted various privileges to the soldiers (who were allowed to live outside the camp) and waged wars against the Parthians and in Britain.
