Schuster, Ignaz, b. Vienna, July 20, 1779, d. Vienna, Nov. 6, 1835. Actor, singer, composer. At first a singer, he soon changed to dramatic art, acted at various Viennese theatres, esp. at the Leopoldstädter Theater. Here he created the character of the umbrella-maker Chrysostomus Staberl in A. Bäuerle's "Die Bürger in Wien" in 1813. The character subsequently appeared in numerous "Staberliaden", comedies with typically Viennese comic characters; from 1817 rivalry with F. Raimund at the Leopoldstädter Theater; 1830 first joint appearance. 1812-1828 directing work at the Leopoldstädter Theater, composed the incidental music for plays by A. Bäuerle, Perinet, J. A. Gleich, also lieder and masses.


Works: Baron Barfuß, 1804; Othellerl, der Mohr von Wien, 1806 (farce); Hamlet, Prinz vom Tandelmarkt, 1807 (parody); Romeo und Julie, 1808 (travesty); Der Palast der Wahrheit, 1810 (romantic-comical opera); Der Zauberspiegel, 1811 (burlesque); Cora, die Sonnenjungfrau, 1812 (comical opera); Der Baum der Diana, 1812 (travesty opera); Die verkehrte Welt, 1814 (farce); Die falsche Primadonna von Krähwinkel, 1818 (musical comedy); Die Abenteuer eines echten Shawls in Wien, 1820 (farce); Die natürliche Zauberei, 1821 (farce); Jupiter in Wien, 1825 (fairy-tale play); Meister Crispin oder Die Wanderung durch die Elemente, 1828 (popular folk comedy).
