At first a singer, he soon changed to dramatic art, acted at various Viennese theatres, esp. at the Leopoldstädter Theater. Here he created the character of the umbrella-maker Chrysostomus Staberl in A. Bäuerle's "Die Bürger in Wien" in 1813. The character subsequently appeared in numerous "Staberliaden", comedies with typically Viennese comic characters; from 1817 rivalry with F. Raimund at the Leopoldstädter Theater; 1830 first joint appearance. 1812-1828 directing work at the Leopoldstädter Theater, composed the incidental music for plays by A. Bäuerle, Perinet, J. A. Gleich, also lieder and masses.
