Schönbauer, LeopoldSchönbauer, Leopold, b. Thaya (Lower Austria), Nov. 13, 1888, d. Vienna, Sept. 11, 1963. Surgeon, cancerologist, founder of neurosurgery in Austria; 1931 head of the Institute of Radiotherapy in Vienna, together with J. Tandler and K. Honey founded the first cancer advice centre in Vienna; 1933-1961 university professor (1953/54 rector), 1945-1961 director of the General Hospital in Vienna and temporary head of the Institute of the History of Medicine, whose journal "Beiträge" he edited from 1948. 1959-1962 Member of the Nationalrat (Austrian People´s Party, ÖVP). Took part in the planning of the new Vienna General Hospital with H. Hoff and K. Fellinger. Works: Hirnchirurgie, 1933 (with H.
