Schneeberg


Schneeberg Mountain, highest mountain in Lower Austria, massif in the Northern Limestone Alps, one of Vienna´s most popular day-trip destinations, on clear days visible from the hills surrounding Vienna. Most easterly 2,000 m-high mountain of the Alps, separated by the Höllental Gorge from the Rax Mountain; Klosterwappen (2,076 m) and Kaiserstein (2,061 m) summits; since 1897 cog railway from Puchberg am Schneeberg (alt. 585 m) to the Hoch-Schneeberg station (alt. 1,796 m). Elisabethkirchlein chapel, Hoch-Schneeberg mountain hotel; mountain refuges: Fischerhütte (alt. 2,061 m, highest mountain refuge in Lower Austria), Damböckhaus (alt. 1,888 m), Sparbacherhütte (alt. 1,248 m). Source region of the 1st Vienna Spring Water Supply System, landscape protection area.
