Schmidt, Johann Georg genannt "Wiener Schmidt"


Schmidt, Johann Georg (known as "Wiener Schmidt"), b. Bohemia, around 1685, d. Krems (Lower Austria), Sept. 15, 1748. Baroque painter; mainly worked in Lower Austria and Vienna. Training in Peter Strudel´s atelier, influenced by Martino Altomonte. Important commissions in collaboration with artists such as J. L. von Hildebrandt, M. Steinl or J. M. Götz.


Works: Altarpieces in Vienna: Am Hof, Annakirche, Franziskanerkirche, Laimgrubenkirche, Malteserkirche, Peterskirche (also ceiling painting), Ruprechtskirche Servitenkirche. - Altarpieces in Lower Austria: abbeys in Altenburg (also ceiling paintings), Klosterneuburg, Lilienfeld and Zwettl; in churches in Aspersdorf, Ebenfurth, Etsdorf, Gaweinstal, Groß-Enzersdorf, Imbach, Jeutendorf, Karnabrunn, Kirchberg am Wagram, Krems (parish church and Dominikanerkirche), Maria Enzersdorf (ceiling painting), Maria Taferl, Mauerbach, Pottendorf, St. Andrä an der Traisen (also ceiling paintings), St. Pölten (Prandtauerkirche), Schönbach, Schwarzenbach an der Gölsen, Staatz, Stettelsdorf, Stockerau, Straning, Weitra. - Altarpieces in Upper Austria: Linz (Deutschordenskirche) and Vöcklamarkt. - Altarpieces in the Czech Republic: Olmütz, Brodek and Breslau.
