Schindler, CarlSchindler, Carl, b. Vienna, Oct. 23, 1821, d. Laab im Walde (Lower Austria), Aug. 22, 1842. Painter of military genre scenes ("Soldaten Schindler"), son of Johann Josef Schindler. Studied at the Vienna Academy and was a private pupil of P. Fendi. Interrupted his studies several times because of poor health. Excellent water colours (esp. water colour sketches); his subjects reflect his attempts to merge the soldier genre with the bourgeois or rustic genre. Strong influence on J. F.
