Scherer, Wilhelm


Scherer, Wilhelm, b. Schönborn (municipality of Göllersdorf, Lower Austria), April 26, 1841, d. Berlin (Germany), Aug. 6, 1886, professor of German. 1868-1871 professor at Vienna University, 1872-1876 at the Universities of Strasbourg and Berlin. Tried to apply the scientific concept of cause and effect to the arts, assuming that German literature developed in phases; the "S. School" influenced German studies even after the turn of the century.
