Schanzel

Schanzel, former fortifications situated on the right bank of the Danube Canal in Vienna where the old Vienna harbour was located. Because the transport barges carrying fruit docked here, the Schanzel became the location of Vienna´s largest fruit market. In the second half of the 19th century the north-western part of the quay, including the Danube canal line of the Stadtbahn transit line (now the U4 underground line), was built to replace the Schanzel.
