Sankt Nikola an der Donau


Sankt Nikola an der Donau, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Perg, alt. 249 m, pop. 919, area 13.20 km2, on the northern bank of the River Danube, in the Strudengau Valley. - Some summer tourism. - In earlier times the goods transported on Danube ships were transferred to wagons to avoid the dangerous rapids downstream of St. Nikola. Parish church, remodelled in Baroque style (2nd  half of the 17th  century) Romanesque choir, with Romanesque and Gothic frescoes, late Gothic reliefs and statue of the Virgin Mary (around 1500); Werfenstein Castle (first documented mention in 1293), enlarged between 1965 and 1967; ruin of Wörth Castle on the island of Wörth situated opposite the town, with late Baroque pietà (called "Wörther Kreuz"). In Sarmingstein, the ruin of Säbnich Castle (first documented mention in the 1st  half of the 12th  century), filial church (17th  century) and "Schiffsmeisterhaus" (former ship dispatcher's house and shipping crew rest station) with "Rittersaal" hall (late Renaissance style).
